Last night a client sent me an email suggesting an interesting a book I should be reading (when I finish it I will let you know if it is worth reading).·Going straight to my iPhone I looked for the book, downloaded and started reading. Later today when I connect my phone to my computer it will automatically download my ebook to my library containing hundreds of similar books and then be available for use on my ipad (unfortunately they won’t let me read books on my iPhone on the plane… yet!)
Reading books on my iPhone is now second nature to me. I haven’t bought a paper book for a couple of years now and in fact, if it is not available as an ebook I won’t bother reading it and the same applies to my favorite magazines and newspapers. The new reading revolution has taken hold and will continue to grow dramatically until a printed book is a thing of the past. Now you might be thinking that there is nothing new about ebooks and you would be right. What is new is the number of people reading them and the number of new ebook readers out there.
In April 2011 the Guardian Newspaper announced that Electronic Books (ebooks) became the largest single format for books in the US.· This is no surprise as the consumption of ebooks is tripling every year while paperbacks are declining rapidly. The really good news is that books sales worldwide are continuing to increase (if you include ebooks) and there is no reason to believe that this trend will change.
So what does that mean to you and me?
Apart from being able to read your favorite books in a format that is extremely convenient at a price that you can afford (Ebooks are almost always cheaper than paper books and many are available for nothing), the really good news for you and I is that the ebook revolution makes it very easy for anybody to be a best selling author with little or no investment other than your time.
When people discover that I am an author they will often tell me that they have always wanted to write a book. Most of us believe we have a book in us, telling stories about our past, writing fiction, or explaining the details of a learnt skill or hobby. Now you have no excuses. If you have a book or are preparing to write a book or thinking that you might like to write a book now is the time to get it published and there is absolutely no money involved.
There are many platforms that you can use to publish your work but the few that I use to get my books to a worldwide audience are the following:
By publishing books on these websites with no investment at all, you will have your masterpiece available anywhere in the world on any of the major books sellers’ websites (Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Barnes and Nobel, Apple iBook, Kalahari, Sony, Kobo, Stanza etc.) For an additional small investment (Just a few rand) you can also have your book available on Amazon.com in traditional print format with Creatspace.com. It is all so quick and easy I don’t know why we are not all doing it.
I have recently put many of my books on www.smashwords.com. The process is a simple one if you follow their instructions and your books are then instantly available worldwide in any ebook format for reading on any ebook reader (Kindle, Sony, Galaxy iPhone etc.) including your friendly old PC or Mac.
